Photobiomodulation: Definition and Principles

In short: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a form of light therapy that exposes tissues to non-ionizing, non-thermal red (≈ 630–660 nm) and near-infrared (≈ 810–850 nm) wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity—without UV radiation or destructive heat. Absorbed by the mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase), this light increases ATP production and triggers a repair cascade. It is also known as red light therapy or LLLT.

What is photobiomodulation (PBM)?

Photobiomodulation is a non-invasive method that uses red or near-infrared light to stimulate the body’s cells. It is also known as low-intensity phototherapy, red light therapy, or LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy). It exposes tissues to specific wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared spectrum without heating or damaging them. Painless, it is used for both wellness and as a complementary medical treatment.

How Does Photobiomodulation Work? The Principle

The principle is similar to photosynthesis: light energy is absorbed by the mitochondria, specifically by the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. This activation increases the productionof ATP, the cell’s energy source, which promotes tissue regeneration, microcirculation, and a reduction in inflammation.

LED or laser?
